How to prepare:
Apple Crumb Bars are a delightful treat that combines a buttery crust, spiced apples, and a crunchy topping. To begin, preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Grease a 20cm (8-inch) square baking pan and line it with parchment paper, allowing for easy removal later. In a large bowl, mix melted unsalted butter, flour, white sugar, baking powder, and salt until well-combined. Add an egg and mix until the mixture is uniform. Press about two-thirds of this dough into the bottom of your prepared pan and bake for 15 minutes, or until lightly golden. While the base is cooling, prepare the apple filling by tossing diced Granny Smith apples with flour, sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a separate bowl.
For the crumble topping, add rolled oats to the reserved dough and mix until incorporated. Spread your apple filling evenly over the crust and crumble the remaining topping evenly across the apples. Bake everything for 30-35 minutes, until the top is golden brown. Once baked, let the Apple Crumb Bars cool in the pan before lifting them out. Serve warm with a drizzle of salted caramel sauce and a scoop of ice cream for an irresistible treat! Variations of Apple Crumb Bars:
Apple Crumb Bars offer a delightful canvas for creativity in the kitchen. You can easily customize the filling to enhance flavors. For a twist, try adding caramel to the apple mixture, providing a rich, gooey contrast. If you’re in the mood for something different, consider incorporating spices like nutmeg or cardamom, which can elevate the aromatic quality of your bars.
Additionally, you can switch out the traditional streusel topping for a nutty crumble by adding almonds or walnuts. For a different texture, consider trying the Apple Pie Crumb Bars recipe, which adds a buttery crust layer beneath the streusel that many find irresistible.
If you enjoy cinnamon-infused desserts, pair these bars with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Enjoying them as a standalone treat or a complement to dishes like Apple Pecan Chicken Salad creates a brilliant contrast of savory and sweet flavors.
Tips for Perfect Apple Crumb Bars:
To achieve the best results with your apple crumb bars, start by selecting high-quality apples. Varietals like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp provide a balanced sweetness and tartness. Make sure to slice the apples evenly for consistent baking. When preparing the crumb topping, use cold butter to create a flaky texture. Avoid overmixing; using your hands can ensure the mixture remains crumbly.
For added flavor, consider incorporating cinnamon, which pairs beautifully with apples. If you have some homemade apple cider, try drizzling just a bit over the apples before adding the crumb layer. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting; this helps them set properly.
